Biography
Having practiced law in the state and federal courts of New York since 1983, Ira M. Newman has developed an expertise and outstanding reputation as a trial lawyer representing plaintiffs in medical malpractice actions, products liability, construction accidents, labor law, automobile accidents, and liability actions and lawsuits where damages are sought as a result of another’s negligence. In addition to trying cases in the counties comprising the greater metropolitan area, Mr. Newman tries matters in the federal courts including those located in other states such as California where in the midst of jury deliberations he achieved a large monetary settlement in a psychiatric malpractice case.
His trial techniques have contributed to successful results in a wide range of cases, including birth trauma, failure to diagnose cancer, failure to provide proper pre-natal care, construction accidents and cases involving severe injuries caused by defective products such as prescription drugs, motor vehicles, snowblowers and lawn equipment. In addition Mr. Newman has participated in and achieved large recoveries for his clients who were injured in automobile accidents and by defective or unsafe conditions. He has been selected as a Super Lawyer every year since 2014. Mr. Newman and his firm have been named as a 2014 Litigator Award Winner, a prestigious National Award conferred on law firms ranking among the top 1% of all lawyers for catastrophic injury, brain injury and spinal cord injury.
Mr. Newman is also admitted to practice law in the state of Florida. He has served on the Board of Directors of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association (www.NYSTLA.org) and is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is a graduate of Bucknell University and Antioch School of Law (David A. Clarke School of Law in Washington D.C.) where he was an Editor of the Antioch Law Journal. Antioch Law School is known to champion the rights of low income people and minorities.
Mr. Newman, with partner, Edward Sanocki, both acting as co-lead counsels, attained numerous successful outcomes, including the following:
- $62,000,000.00 verdict in a surgical malpractice case involving bowel perforation during a gynecological laparoscopic surgery that was undiagnosed, causing infection and resulting in the amputation of both legs;
- $32,500,000.00 verdict in a motor vehicle accident case involving a police van that struck a 13-year-old boy who was crossing the street against the light and suffered serious burn injuries due to the hot engine while he was trapped under the van.
